Recognized by sight: The intense yellow with contrasting white doesn’t look like any Russula I know of. It looks like there might be a trace of veil remnants on the cap margin and the stipe texture doesn’t look right for Russula. If it does have veil remnants then I’d say Fluccularia.

those russulas tend to shatter when thrown or knocked against a head…

I agree with ya Nathan, the texture on that cap enlargement is perplexing…but apparently this bright mushroom has a potentially pruinose cap surface. and those “veil remnants” just look like a bit of extra tissue….like skin tags (ew!) in we aging humans!

as to edibility, apparently this beautiful and distinctive russula species IS edible…and tasting it helps you to nail the ID. It tastes pleasant, as opposed to making you want to spit for the next several hours, another possibility alluded to by Gerhard…

potentially dangerous blackening and reddening russulas are pretty darn distinctive, and look nuttin’ like this one. Most other russulas can have their edibility determined by a mere nibble…

thanks for posting this. it’s a beaut!

Yes, Russulas can kill…but only if eaten.

R. subnigricans, even of Asian descent, still won’t kill you if you nibble it and spit it out.
Tasting mushrooms is part of identification, especially with Russula.

The Asian Russula subnigricans has killed numerous people, especially in Japan. The toxin has recently been isolated:

You or your liver can’t die by tasting a Russula; just your tongue can die if it is very acrid, haha!

Taste? No thanks.

This mushroom’s bright color reminds me of a banana, but liver failure reminds me of dying. I’ll stick to eating things I find in the grocery store until I get kicked out by the manager.

How about the taste?
