Observation 216466: Amanita sect. Amanita

When: 2015-09-18

Collection location: Hickory Run State Park, Carbon Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

No specimen available

Under Norway spruce.

Spores subglobose to occasionally globose with max length just short of 11 mu.

Stipe base damaged when the mushroom was excavated. But it looks like there may have been appressed limbate material.

This location typically yields A. crenulata and A. praecox growing in close proximity. The somewhat similar cap color, variably long marginal striations on the praecox, and similar spore size/shape have caused me a fair amount of confusion… not to mention that faded versions of A. flavorubens are also common in this same location (these usually lack all striations and have much differently shaped spores). When there has been a lot of rainfall, all three types grow together… large parches of yellowish Amanitas.
