Doug brought me an actual specimen from the same location. However, I’m wondering if there might be two species.

beyond a doubt it’s SOME kind of agaricus species. Cap grossly similar to the toxic A. californicus.

grassy habitat is one clue to ID, but we need odor (rub the base of the stem or the cap edge and sniff) and a photo of the entire mushroom dug up: partial veil and stem characters also important, as well as any staining.

and sometimes even with all of that we STILL can’t ID it to species, even in hand, let alone long distance.

The third image shows a partial cap from another the underside.
The forth image shows one split while fresh.
The fifth image shows the same one that was split 10 minutes later.

I was not able to observe a stain or either yellow or red.

Seeing the underside is necessary to figure out the genus for sure. If there are any fresh ones, scratch the base of the stalk and look for a yellow or red color change. The edge of the cap can also give a good staining reaction. Finally, cutting a fresh one down the length of the stalk and through the cap, and posting a photo both fresh and after 10 minutes or so would help narrow down the species.
