I have some more today which might be the same lichen. I’ll post them later.

You have your work cut out for you!

But for this specimen, I wouldn’t rule out Buellia punctata, even if it somehow managed to avoid getting on the checklist.

It seemed like the best match based on the lichen checklist.

But there was no microscopic confirmation. I don’t have any of the tech necessary for that. I estimate there to be about 130 types of lichens at this part of the SMM at the moment…many of those may just be variants of each other, but there’s plenty to find here. I’m finding new ones all the time. At this specific park my theoretical list is currently 58 species.

Though, only about 5 of those 100 are identified! Would love to tag along with someone here so I can actually familiarize myself with them…

Nice find

Didn’t realize there was such good material on that side of the Santa Monica Mts. But unless you’ve hidden some microscopic details from us, I feel obliged to vote this observation a little more conservatively! I think this could also be Buellia or even Arthonia. (Probably not Lecidea or Lecidella or Bacidia because I would expect those to have better-developed apothecial rims, but weirder things have happened…)
