On the Amanita studies site, there is a group pic of A. brunnescens all from a fairy ring. Check out the color range. I don’t think that var. pallida is a taxonomically useful name…i.e, it is a taxonomic synonym of the var. brunnescens. If you go back to Pomerleau’s 1980 field guide (monster) book for Quebec, you’ll find that he had formed the same opinion back then.
