is definitely not a useful feature for identifying this (or really any) Lactarius.
The orangey-pink color of the cap and yellowing of the latex on the other hand are practically diagnostic for this species in CA.

Noah, why do you think it’s xanthogalactus – it has a bulbous stem at the end. I’ve never seen that on xanthogalactus.
