Phone cams suck

EXIF meta on this image says it was taken with a Nokia 5678. I’m guessing a lot of the crummier photos uploaded come from phone cameras. Aside from the iPhone’s and perhaps other 3G smartphones’, these tend more or less to suck.

A particular problem with phone cams is that they generally don’t have a macro mode, which is very handy for getting good, in-focus photos of small subjects like mushrooms.

Even smartphones have another significant weakness: there’s generally no way to mount them on a tripod for additional stability against motion blur, useful in the dim forest environments where many of our quarries lurk, where one needs longer exposure times to get a good picture. (I foresee tripods with vise-like clamps instead of screw mounts turning up someday, if phone cameras ever become good enough to be worth such, but for now nothing of the sort can be found at your local photography supply store.)

My recommendation to anyone posting pictures at this site is to at least get a cheap handheld point-and-shoot digital camera — used ones can probably be had for under fifty bucks that will be adequate — and learn how to use its macro mode. If motion blur becomes an issue, small tripods go as low as $30-40. You might want to use one of those octopus-arm ones for mushroom photography, unless your camera lets you combine (optical) zoom and macro, or you can find a collapsible one (with telescoping legs) that can be made quite short (10cm or less, preferably).

PLEASE don’t post crap. Please learn to get your subjects in focus. Please don’t post more crappy, out of focus pics. It detracts from the usefulness of this great resource.

Sorry. I can’t see it clearly enough.

Very best,
