Observation 22962: Lactarius lignyotellus A.H. Sm. & Hesler

When: 2009-07-06

Collection location: Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave in NE PA

No specimen available

Notes:
I’ve been finding lots of the black velvet types of milkies this summer. Posted an observation a week or so ago That I called L. subgerardii. Based that guess on the subdistant gills. They were found in mixed woods, lots of hemlock. This latest such obs features mushrooms growing in a spruce stand. The gill adges appear to be darkened. So habitat + this feature leads my to Roody’s “Sooty Spruce Lactarius.”

I had always expected that L. lignyotus has close gills. But these black velvet types with subdistant gills otherwise look a lot like L. lignyotus.
