Inside it was the consistency of a hard cheese.

No, it was firm but not hard or carbonaceous. I could easily cut through it with my pocket knife. No zonation as you mention. Exterior brown and leathery and cream white inside.

That’s all sorts of interesting! Good find. It’s definitely not a Daldinia — those have concentric zonation when you section them, and your section is solid white inside. It may be Xylariaceae, but it may not… maybe Hypocreaceae? Was it hard and carbonaceous?
