It seems to me that I have collected this in Tlaxcala, Mex. and in Costa Rica. My impression was that it is undescribed, and assignable to sect. Amanita.

brown cap color is a bit off for my species concept of pantherina (altho surely there are regional differences, and color is not the best way to ID). More concerning to me is the odd, flattened bulbous base, with a more “muscaria-like” volva (rings of material) rather than the close cup with an inrolled margin found in pantherina. Not sure what this is exactly, tho…and w/out a collection, we may never know…
