I have seen this species once…

about 20 years ago in New Jersey. The large size and red cap make it unmistakable. It’s a 6-8 acre spot that I visit every spring, but I haven’t seen “big red” since. Discina (Gyromitra) brunnea is fairly common in this spot.

It is the most common Gyromitra around here. We also have G. brunnea.
