Observation 23747: Entoloma P. Kumm.

When: 2009-07-31

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

Found these scattered here and there, each one typically solitary, in Zones 03, 05, and 12. Pinus strobus, Abies balsamea, Acer sp., and Betula papyrifera are the common-denominator trees.

Cap: to 1.5 inches wide, convex, becoming nearly flat, brown, darker in the center and red-brown along the cap margin; up close, has dark brown radial fibers on a yellow-brown background. Stipe: equal, as long as the cap is wide or a bit longer, tan with red/brown tones above, with a white foot. Has a distinct club foot attached to duff by white mycelium, but this is buried. Gills: close, notched attachment, tan. One of three specimens closely examined had some somewhat veined to forked gills, but only that one.

No indications of veils, partial or universal.

Couldn’t find a close match in Lincoff. Tricholoma vaccinum has a similar looking cap, and the description of its gills is close, but the stipe is different.

So I’ve left this as Tricholoma sp., and I’ve not given even that too much credence.

could be something in the vicinity of Entoloma formosum or xanthochroum, but I can’t really suggest any species here.

Entoloma would have pink gills and Cystoderma a ring on the stem and scales below the ring, I would have thought.
