Found solitary, growing under water oaks. Thick fleshed and fairly sturdy sacklike volva. Cap diameter: ~6 cm. striation extends roughly 1cm into cap. Length: 7.5 cm.

The volva is an interesting element in this species…quite robust from what I can see in your images.

this one before either (which isn’t saying much). Of all the gray Vaginatae we have down here, this is the first I’ve seen with a volva like this. I do have a specimen and it’s drying now. I’ll send it with the others I’ve set aside for you, Rod.

This is not something that I commonly see.

In fact, I don’t recall seeing the species previously. Can you get dried material, Logan? A description of the mushroom in fresh condition would be very valuable also. Thank you for posting this observation.
