Yup, with more thought I’m going with my first guess too. Too orange and wrong time of year for H. coccinea maybe. But it looked so much like that picture on the cover……

Hey Geoff – my first thought was H. miniata but then it looked like a dead ringer match for the jacket Cover I mentioned. But then the mushrooms on the cover of North American Species of Hygrophorus is also a H. coccinea but they are more conic shaped and not as good a match. Do you know what the gills looked like? Color, attachment?

they do look to be the cover species! I’m sorry I didn’t get a good “upskirt” shot on these.
