These conks, found in MDZ1 in Zone 38, resemble Fomes fomentarius but were not growing on aspen. They were on a sizable dead jack pine.

Interesting conks

They are rather Fomes-like on the upper side, but the hymenium reminds more of Fomitopsis or Heterobasidion annosum (rarely hoof-shaped). The latter is easiest recognized by a strong reaction with Melzer’s (dextrinoid).
Does Fomitopsis officinalis occur on Jack pine..?
