Observation 25381: Fomitopsis betulina sensu auct. amer.

When: 2009-09-16

Collection location: Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Bob Zuberbuhler (Bob Z)

No specimen available

Notes:
This 5" by 4" shelf mushroom was found on a large deciduous log. The free margin was very wavy and was rolled under at the edge. The back margin was considerably folded down and the short, 5/8" diameter stalk arose from this folded down area of the top, so that the stalk was at the same level as the top of the cap. Seems an unusual arrangement. The cap was smooth and was a mosaic of tan and darker brown areas. The under side was white, the pores were very small and the edges of the pores rather thick.
