Cryptoporus volvatus

is used by a bark beetle to survive the winter. Emerging in the spring covered in spores, it then proceeds to spread the fungus. The appearance of Cryptoporus is therefore an indicator of highly stressed trees – especially Pinus contorta, at least in my area.
