I am simply not familiar enough with the species differences in a notoriously difficult group. This fruit body did have a somewhat swollen but NOT abruptly bulbous rooting base, with the lower parts continuing beyond what was shown, but broken in collecting.

The fact that Jay Justice, an experienced eastern amanita txonomist IDed it, was enuf for me at the time. Beyond that….maybe Rod could weigh in.
