Also, I noticed the picture showing it cooked shows it in soups and/or stews. Have you any knowledge/experience of using it this way?

Which species is difficult to articulate from slices you will have to do microscopy and maybe even DNA since you can’t see the overall morphology. Some possibilities are Ganoderma multipileum and Ganoderma lingzhi, both species are cultivated in China.
