Observation 26688: Cortinarius bulliardii (Pers.) Fr.

When: 2009-10-11

Collection location: Thoiry, France [Click for map]

Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)

No specimen available

Found under hornbeam and mixed hardwoods.

It seemed like the id for this one was easy enough, with the growth under hardwoods, and the bright orange-red base.

One of the guys at the meeting asks me if I know Bulliard, and I thought he meant the mushroom, and I said no. Then he takes me over to the shelf of books, and the bottom shelf has all these old cracked leather books. Turns out they are first edition of Bulliard’s books on mushrooms and plants, published in 1809. He had drawings of all species described, and hand printed into the books, you could see the press marks on the paper. Neat.
