Used references: Ubiquitous. When I inoculated a row of 5-foot tall Douglas-fir stumps at Paul Bishop’s Tree Farm, then tried growing Paul Stamets’ Laetiporus sulphureus on them, I failed. A year later Laetiporus coniferoides identified growing on conifer stumps and logs, so was trying to grow the wrong species. Instead, had magnificent fruitings of Tremella mesenterica, which was not inoculated on the stumps, but which grew quite well anyway. Begs the question: if you are attempting to grow a fungus and a different fungus grows, haven’t you still grown a fungus?
