The 1st siting showed little white balls and little black ones with stems.

I think the white balls became the mature Stemonitopsis typhina, and as you wrote, the black sporocarps were a different species.

and saw this morning there was new growth. Close up photos are with a clip-on macro lens on my iPhone 7.
