and a host of Monterey pine, I think it’s pretty clear that this is the CA muscaria.

You folks in NZ have ridiculous numbers of CA native species!!! From our trout to our redwoods to our muscaria!

BTW, thanks so much for your suggestions, Michael. We did manage to find a few patches of forest with some very interesting fungi, and especially in those southern beech forests. Just returned from Oz yesterday and am steadily going through my photos!
