Observation 275045: Hydnaceae sensu lato

Notes:
Found on branch on the understory leaf bed. A speciman nearby appears to be identical; it is growing all over a living tree that appears to be under attack (it is too early in spring to know for sure. All bark appears to be intact). Riverside, hardwood, very moist area. Texture is soft, light scent similar to hericium sp. White with tan areas.

Along the edges it has the appearance of starting to form fruiting bodies (?) This fungi has likely emerged for more than a week.
