certainly rotten material

but those red colors and general gestalt fit, including a rooting bulb, which is one of the many forms that lower stipe can take. Here is one of my photos of a novinupta w/a rooting bulb; there are others:

It is fairly obvious from the photos that the material is rather old…

A pronounced, rooting bulb…

…is not present in novinupta. This kind of bulb is more often found in section Lepidella than in section Validae.
