Not sure whether these were growing directly from the wood or from the thick layer of moss that coated much of the log. But, like you say, getting a confident species ID here looks to be unrealistic.

There are several brown/grey Mycenas growing on wood. The group is not well understood, and even microscopical differences are confusing. It seems hopeless to attempt to identify them without microscopy. And M. coracina/atrocyannea is (mostly) terrestrial.
