We were working our way through the wooded parkland when he called to me to come see the giant puffballs. It was near the end of a long day of BioBlitzing in Arlington county. My feet were sore. My camera battery was giving out. I was tired. I was sure he was joking (wrong season, wrong habitat, son who enjoys pulling my leg).
“No,” I said.
“No — really! You’ve got to see this.”
“No.”
“Mom…I’m not kidding. It’s a giant puffball.”
“No way.”
“I’m serious! It’s really a giant puffball.”
“You’d better have a giant puffball over there, I’m staggering over…”
And the rest is history.
