Observation 277334: Peziza Dill. ex Fr.

When: 2017-05-20

Collection location: Loyalsock Trail, Sullivan Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

No specimen available

On the ground on the side of a trail that is a converted railroad bed, about 20 feet away from obs 277091 and probably the same species. Centrally attached.

Upper (inner) surface minutely bumpy. Lower surface grainy, like sandpaper. Context fragile.

I waited 4 days for a spore drop, but nothing observable showed up on the microscope slide. Found a few spores in a random drop of Congo red (tried also with cotton blue). Spores are verrucose, some showing slightly bulging apices, others showing well-defined apiculi. Spores appear to be very similar to those seen in 277091, with the apiculi showing up better in the cotton blue (277091).

Fruit bodies look like Peziza. But spores with apical ornamentation/flaps seem out of place for Peziza.

Species Lists

Immature asci…? In Meltzer’s.
Spore in lower portion of the photo has well-defined apiculi. a few others like this were seem, but the other photos were badly focused.
