Observation 277449: Dermatocarpon Eschw.

When: 2017-05-21

Collection location: Rockwoods Reservation, Missouri, USA [Click for map]

Who: weed lady (Sylvia )

No specimen available

Found on rock amid mosses. Leafy. Easily removed. Under surface brown. At first I thought this could be a lichen, but another option would be a Bryophyte (plant). Possibly a liverwort or something related. Maybe someone has an answer to this. Thanks!

Now I not only have this in the right Kingdom, but have a genus. I just was not sure that this was a lichen. I am looking at other observations on MO and online and it certainly looks like you are correct as to the genus. Not as important as to the exact species. From what I have just read it appears there about 8 species in the Ozark Region. Thanks again. Sylvia
