In the field, flavoconia, a macroscopically variable species, is easily confused with A. flavorubens or A. frostiana. But when the cap is deeply orange with numerous yellow warts and lacks marginal striations, the partial veil yellow, and the stipe decorated with yellow powder, these (and a few other) alternatives to flavoconia are eliminated.

Old growth forest with hemlock and various hardwoods. No oak in this area. This one is a particularly robust example of flavoconia…. I think…
