Asexual stage of gray patches with white, wavy-edged cushions on the bark of a hardwood stump. Patches 1-to-1.5 inches diameter. If tapped gently, puffs of white spores released.
Gray-white patches turn black and become extremely brittle, and produce the sexual stage ascospores.
