Boletus appendiculatus is a brazenly misapplied name to any of the Appendiculati Boletes that occur in California. These are a fascinating group with multiple ecological niches in the State. We discussed this on MushroomTalk recently. They need to be studied and I’ve pestered and will do so tomorrow again the local professors. At least we have material galore – a lot more of these get digested gastrointestinally than in a cognitive sense…

altho it looks more like AMERICAN Boletus regius or Boletus speciosus. Is there a name available for that now?
