Who: Dave W (Dave W)

Specimen available

I would like to say this was the first of the year on my lawn, but yesterday a predecessor fell victim to the mower. I figured there’d be more in approximately the same spot, and this morning I could see one from my front porch. A really nice specimen.

Spore lengths in a few cases approached 12 microns. I think the smaller globose profiles represent spores that are seen end-on. I listed two different spore dimensions in the title of the spore photo. The micrometer in my scope requires a measurement factor of ~1.17.

Note the thickly membranous basal volva. This is not something I have always seen with this species. Stipe base buried as usual.

4 hours after harvesting; cap somewhat expanded.
I assume the spores are aligned in basically two different ways, long-view profile and end-on. Two different types of spore measurements are proposed.
