Observation 27993: Psilocybe allenii Borov., Rockefeller & P.G. Werner

When: 2009-11-10

Collection location: Orinda, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Richard Sullivan (enchplant)

No specimen available

Okay this is a truly poor photograph of a really mangled sporocarp but hey at least you can see a diagnostic feature fairly clearly, in the blue staining. I bet you this will get more than 10 hits. Seems like wretched pictures of psilocybes get more attention than all the other beautiful fungi on this site!

Anyhow it was growing in a well irrigated garden in the bark mulch. No idea about species.

Sorry to give credence to your gripe regarding exaggerated interest in the genus Psilocybe, however I do know the genus fairly well, and that appears to be the undescribed species that is being called “Cyanofriscosa”, though I can’t say for sure based on this one, admittedly poor photo, haha.

Thanks for posting it anyway, they are not often documented that far East.
