If you damaged the gills…

even slightly, or broke off a piece of cap, you would likely notice the red stain that sets in on dissimulans (and eventually changes to black/gray). This species has widely separated gills. R. densifolia also exhibits the same red-to-black stain, but it has closely spaced gills. The staining is the key to these types.

Gills appear to possibly be widely spaced. So dissimulans may be correct.
