Notes:
A single smallish fb growing in grass/moss under oaks.
Mild taste and pleasant odor. The cut flesh stained pinkish-brown.
KOH on cap = almost black. KOH on flesh = negative.

DNA sequencing & results (posted 17-Feb-19):
> A clean and contiguous nrLSU sequence consisting of the first 984 bps (through to and ending in the LR5 primer) was obtained by Dr. Kudzma from this material. There are 3 ambiguous characters in this stretch of the locus; 2 x “R” (A/G)+ a “Y” (C/T).
> A BLASTn of this sequence closely matched two GenBank accessions of T. variobrunneus, KF030315 & KF030316. Also, alignment of this sequences with that of another suspected variobrunneus collection of mine, obs 244395, showed them to be very similar. Furthermore, Geoff Balme’s mysterious obs 287518 also appears to be this taxon based on the nrLSU data (vide infra).
> Below is the alignment analysis of the 5 LSU sequences. There are a total of 8 mismatching and/or ambiguous positions (single nucleotide polymorphisms); other than that the sequences are perfectly identical. Character “M” seen in MO287518 corresponds to A/C. SNP sites 243, 448, and 758 can be considered “fully polymorphic” because they feature all possible combinations of a substitution series; for example site 243 has a resolved “A” in two sequences, a resolved “G” in one, and “A/G” in the remaining two.
Note that GenBank’s KF030316 doesn’t have any ambiguous characters. This single haplotype is present only in MO244395, which in addition to it has three other haplotypes at positions 512 & 570, i.e., combinations C & T, T & C, and T & T.
