Beech, birch, hemlock woods.

Tylopilus sordidus was also suggested as a possible ID for this. But this specimen seem unusually large/robust for sordidus (at least in my experience), and the cut context lacked a decidedly red stain phase. (There was a bit of reddish-brown stain along with blue staining.)
