Observation 295485: Hydnum subgenus Hydnum

This hefty monster was collected by Ed Zeme at the NJMA foray. It’s been so dry in NJ, I couldn’t believe the sight of this over-sized fleshy mushroom. It must have been growing near a bog or another readily available source of water.
Ed, who apparently has never had a culinary experience with this kind of mushroom, eagerly took his prized hedgehog home, and one can easily guess at its fate; however, he was gracious to donate a sizable sample for a scientific study.
The cap was easily 6-7" wide (the phone in the pic is 4.5" long).
