Found it in Hesler & Smith, 1963, North American Species of Hygrophorus. page 126.
B&W photo in Hard, 1908, Mushrooms, Edible & Otherwise.
B&W photo in Kauffman, 1918, The Gilled Mushrooms (Agaricaceae) of Michigan and the Great Lakes Region.
Not recorded by Largent in the Agaricales of California.

The dried specimen still has orange marginate gills.

I went and retrived it from the dead carpophore pile and dried it. It took twelve days to find a match in the literature. The main problem was the Agaricales of CA did not have a description, just similar species that never did fit very well.

Nope; just took some more pictures of it the next day and threw it out.
