before the paper came out this was close with other species of heterobasidon and was going under annosum just as other missapplied names in fungi go . The renaming is to reflect the current position in phylogeny and to keep MO up to date.

H. annosum v occidentale

I originally listed the identification as Heterobasidium annosum. Upon reflection (prompted by Chaelthomas’s Proposed Name) I realized that the ID’er meant H. annosum complex. (It cannot be H. annosum sensu stricto because that’s a Eurasian species, and the ID’er know the difference.)
As between the PNS look-alikes H. irregulare and H. occidentale, this is more likely H. occidentale because of the habitat.
