Type specimens

A MyCoPortal serach has no hits for types housed in the USA. (Also note that MyCoPortal synonymizes G. penetrans and G. hybridus.)

MycoBank, which does not synonymize those names, says there are type/ex-type specimens for G. penetrans, but not G. hybridus. Those specimens are housed in the CBS-KNAW Collections in Utrecht, Netherlands. But I cannot figure out how to trace them further online using the info from MycoBank.

Sequence notes

This is close to 4 G. penetrans and 2 G. hybridus in GenBank. I took all G. penetrans ITS sequences, and all G. hybridus ITS sequences (altogether 24 sequences}, aligned them and built a tree. The tree had two distinct branches, with both names mixed together on both branches. There does appear to be 2 species present, but there is no consistency in how the 2 names are applied to the 2 species. It would be nice to have a type specimen to sequence.
