I really appreciate you commenting on these lichens. I want to start paying more attention to (and learning) them!
I love the book “The Macrolichens of New England”, it’s on the shelf right next to me in fact!
The trick at first is just learning what things to look for. For example, be sure to include close-up photos showing any soredia or isidia on the upper surface. And it is a good habit to get into to turn lichens over and take close-up photos of the underside.
But most important — something I can’t stress enough! — start with good well-developed specimens. Lichens are highly variable even under optimal conditions. Struggling specimens can do the damnedest things.
Enjoy!
