Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) trunk bark at old homestead dating to 40’s or 50’s, in a semi-arid grassland setting.
Splitting this off from observation 224870.
Apothecia crowded, with flexuous white persistent rims, disks not darkening, commonly over 1mm diameter, up to 1.5mm. Algae continuous and thick across base of apothecia. Epihymenium red-brown, with coarse crystals, both soluble in K, amphithecium with algae and a pocket of large crystals not soluble in K.
Spores 8 per ascus, simple, hyaline, ellipsoid. Average size: 13.8×7.1µm (n=9).
