Observation 30970: Xylaria Hill ex Schrank

When: 2009-12-24

Collection location: Rotary Park, Clarksville, Tennessee, USA [Click for map]

Who: jim (ckm3)

Specimen available

These sexual state Xylaria hypoxolon fruiting bodies were 2.25 to 2.5 cm tall, about 1.5 mm thick. The exemplars were taken from a group of about six ‘patches’ growing along the dorsal surface of a fallen log. No spores were obtained – the area had experienced at least 3 nights of 25ºF temperature and it is presumed these were either dead or dormant. Note that the tips appear to have a slight reddish cast. Photos 1 & 2 are the same group, rotated. Photo 3 was an adjacent group. Nikon D40, Sigma 90mm macro.

Environment: Found on a decaying deciduous log in deep grass at the edge of a powerline right-of-way, about 25 feet from a small creek.
