Observation 314: Hydnellum peckii Banker
When: 1994-01-15
Collection location: Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Santa Cruz Co., California, USA [Click for map]
No specimen available
Notes:
The date is only accurate to the month.
Identified by sight initially. Further reading revealed the sister species H. ferrugineum. They can be separated by taste. H. peckii is acrid and H. ferrugineum is mild. When I returned to the area where I took this picture another year, I found another mushroom similar to this one which I tasted. It was amazingly acrid.
