in an area dominated by conifers, mainly pine. But the woods were mixed, oak was likely present. Not really sure about what type of wood this old branch is.

Michael Kuo provides a detailed description of the fruiting habit of Colpoma quercinum; how the fruit bodies at first develop beneath the bark and then force their way through the surface. The branch seen in this observation shows bumps beneath the bark which may be examples of Colpoma fruit bodies that are in the process of emerging. I imagine species of Colpoma other than quercinum use similar fruiting processes.
