but to me this is not entire featureless. There appear to be a small number of round sunken disks of some form, whether apothecia or not, and the lumpy formation is a bit unusual. I did consider some other species (e.g. D. scruposus) but there was nothing that seemed to be obviously similar. I don’t know. Just need to invest in KOH to have much hope with crusts.

Aspicilia is always a safe guess for featureless, ugly grayish/brownish crusts in California! :)
