Substrate and habitat: Growing on rock in an open woodland of piñon, juniper, and oak.
Identification: Xanthoparmelia is one of the most species-rich foliose lichen genera. There are 65 species on the most recent North American list and more than 600 species worldwide, many in the southern hemisphere. Specific determinations require a good deal of chemistry and experience, but with or without their specific names attached the range of patterns these photogenic lichens present is fascinating.
