Observation 32171: Volvopluteus gloiocephalus (DC.) Vizzini, Contu & Justo

When: 2010-01-18

Collection location: San Mateo, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Tom (LanLord)

No specimen available

I’m guessing this is a volvariella just after the volva splits open.
There are no trees in the vicinity.

Recognized by sight: Volvariella typically grows on either rice straw or wood, neither of which appears in the photos. Looks terrestrial, and likely Amanita. But without seeing the base of the specimen, difficult to say further.
