Proposed Names

Recognized by sight: usually considered conspecific with U. ceratina, but split by Tavares on basis of larger cortical cells than European material (chemistry apparently the same). According to CALS, there is a unicolored medulla form and a tricolored medulla form (which may be a separate species) to the North. This would be the monochromatic form. This taxon has been collected on the same slope previously (teixeira trail). Macroscopic features like European U. ceratina, but becoming quite robust.
Used references: CALS bulletin volume 8 number 1: some species of the genus Usnea in California, species description by Herre (The Lichen Flora of the Santa Cruz Peninsula), iNaturalist
Based on microscopic features: cortex magnified
Based on chemical features: medulla yellowing with bleach
